Demons blank Blazers, inch closer to playoff berth

JACOB YOUNG SHUT Ridge View down in a six-inning effort in Lugoff-Elgins 4-0 win on Monday night at Optimist Field.
Last season, Lugoff-Elgin received a rude introduction to the world of 4A baseball as the 2010 AAA state champions were on the outside looking in when it came time for the post-season in the state’s largest classification. Now, less than three full weeks into regular season play, Randy Stokes’ team is in the thick of the Region 4-4A chase and on the verge of qualifying for a state tourney berth. Thanks to last Friday’s 4-3 win at Dutch Fork and a 4-0 blanking of visiting Ridge View on Monday, L-E is 3-1 in conference games. Last year, five league wins was enough to get the fifth-place team from the seven-team circuit into the playoffs. The Demons can take a giant stride toward returning to playing baseball in late April and early May with a pair of wins this week.L-E is in the midst of a four-game week --- including three region contests --- which will close with a non-league pairing at Camden on Saturday.
