New student orientation, at most schools, is held either in the final few day(s) leading up to the new school year or, on the first day of classes. For the Lugoff-Elgin football team, orientation came in week seven, prior to the Demons’ Region 4-4A opener with Richland Northeast. Moving approximately half his defensive players to offense and vice-versa, head coach Scott Jones saw his team come up just short of grabbing that elusive first win of the season as the hosts Cavaliers held on for a 21-14 victory. Now, with another week of practice in their new spots on the field, the Demons will see how the changes play in front of the home crowd which will be in the stands for tonight’s homecoming contest with visiting Ridge View. After seeing his team still have a chance to win last week’s game in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, Jones termed the move a success.“I thought the changes worked out pretty well,” he said in looking back to the RNE game.“I thought our defense got better. We gave up two cheap scores in the secondary and, to my understanding, in the second half, we limited Richland Northeast to 50 yards of offense.
