L-ES BOBBY GARY SWATS away an Irmo shot in the second half of Fridays game played against the nations 23rd ranked team inside the Demons Den.
For the better part of one half, you would have been hard-pressed to find anyone in the Lugoff-Elgin gym who would have told you that visiting Irmo was playing like the nation’s 23rd ranked boys basketball team. That all changed in the opening five and a half minutes of the third quarter as the Yellow Jackets used a 19-0 run to turn what had been a 39-29 halftime lead into a more than comfortable 58-29 advantage. That parlayed into a 79-46 win over the host Demons, which closed their season with a 9-14 record and a 1-9 mark in Region 4-4ALike a bad cold, L-E would not go away in the first half, drawing to within eight points on two occasions, the second of those coming on a Bobby Gary 3-point shot with 21 seconds left in the second quarter which trimmed the deficit to 37-29. Unfazed, the Yellow Jackets (24-0) came right back with USC signee Justin McKie calmly drilling a 10-footer from the left side as the buzzer sounded to give Irmo a 10-point halftime lead.McKie’s jumper would set the tone for the opening of the second 16 minutes in which the guests used a pair of 3-balls from Alex Quillen and one from McKie to trigger the 19-0 spree.
