Calling it a departmental, rather than an individual honor, Lugoff-Elgin High School’s Scott Jones was recently named as the Region 4-4A Athletic Director of the Year. This was the second time in which the Demons’ athletic director and head football coach garnered such an award. He was also honored in a similar fashion when the school competed in the AAA ranks. When discussing the honor, Jones quickly credited the coaches and staff who make up the school’s 13 athletic programs which encompass 32 teams, including varsity, junior varsity and ninth-grade programs.Jones said the coaches, staff and administration at the school form the backbone of the athletic department.“Obviously, I’m honored,” Jones said of receiving the award which is voted on by his peers in Region 4-4A, “but I have a lot of great people who I work with. That has allowed me to receive this award.”The region athletic director of the year is an honor which includes more than a program’s cumulative wins and losses, but also the way things are run and how the respective teams from a school carry themselves on and off the playing surface.Jones said when it comes to those categories, he considers himself fortunate to have surrounded himself with men and women who always keep the student-athletes first when coaching their respective teams.“I think it shows that the other people in our region recognize that although we have struggled, at times, in different sports,” he said of the award, “the overall perception is that we do a pretty good job with what we have to work with here at Lugoff-Elgin.”
