KELLI MURPHY PLAYED HER way to being the top junior girls golfer in the Carolinas in 2012.
West End, N.C. --- Kelli Murphy, a junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, was named the 2012 Richard S. Tufts Junior Girls Player of the Year by the Carolinas Golf Association.The Elgin resident, who committed to continue her academic and golf pursuits at Auburn University, was one of three first-time winners of the award which were presented in six different divisions by the CGA.In addition to Murphy, the other five winners and that divisions are: Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. (Men), Dawn Woodard of Greer (Women), Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. (Senior Men), Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. (Senior Women) and Keenan Huskey of Greenville (Junior Boys).The honor is the first as Carolinas Junior Girls Player of the Year for Murphy, who is entering her fifth season as a member of the Lugoff-Elgin varsity golf team.Murphy enjoyed a memorable 2012 summer campaign with several top finishes including third at WSCGA Junior Girls Championship, a tie for sixth at the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational, a second place finish at the CPGA Charles Tilghman Junior Championship and finishing in a tie for third at the Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls Championship.Murphy also advanced to the finals of the Carolinas Junior Girls Championship and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship played at the Lake Merced Golf Club in northern California.Away from CGA events, Murphy won her third consecutive Sonic Women’s City Golf Championship in Columbia, this time, by a whopping 13 strokes in the event played over the Forest Lake Country Club course in June.In October, Murphy won the Region 4-4A girls’ golf championship by nine strokes over her nearest competitor. Murphy was competing as an individual since the schools does not field a girls’ golf team.Last month, Murphy capped an eventful 2012 by winning the 19th annual Ford Picard Christmas Classic at Wild Dunes Link Course in a tournament played in windy and cold conditions. She also won that event in 2010.The Richard S. Tufts Awards were established in 1997 to honor Carolinas amateur golfers who had exceptional individual tournament performances over the preceding year.
