After opening the 4A state playoffs with an 11-0 whitewashing of Orangeburg-Wilkinson, the Lugoff-Elgin girls soccer team was knocked out of the postseason following a 4-2 loss to Colleton County on Wednesday.
The Lady Demons went up 1-0 and 2-1, with Chandler Moore scoring both L-E goals with assists from Johanna Garcia and Ashley Smith, respectively.
“We fought valiantly and played extremely well, especially on offense but couldn’t quite capitalize on enough of (our) chances,” said L-E head coach Carl Spoto. “It was a great season and certainly raised the bar for girls’ soccer at L-E.”
Scoring nine first half goals, L-E improved to 18-3 on the season with an 11-0 shutout over visiting Orangeburg-Wilkinson in Monday’s opening round of the 4A Lower State tournament.
Darcy Belcher led the way with for Spoto’s squad with three goals and an assist with fellow co-captain Ashley Smith adding a pair of goals and an assist.
Adding a goal each were Sophia Moschella, Sydney Stanley, Johanna Garcia, Chandler Moore, Kaitlyn Wheeler and Fatima Agredano with Moore also doling out a pair of assists. Moschella, Garcia and Christine Stuhn all chipped in with assists.
The Lady Demon defense kept O-W from attempting a shot on goal which helped give keeper Madison Guthrie her 14th clean sheet of the season.
