Like a steamroller making it way over fairly level terrain, the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team opened its five-match Region 4-4A campaign with a pair of resounding wins on Tuesday night. The Demons, ranked seventh in the most recent 4A state poll, flattened Spring Valley in the opening pairing, 71-6, before a nearly identical match in the nightcap, a 72-9 pasting of host Ridge View. First-year L-E head coach Ted Monroe encouraged his the team to take care of business and to “get on the mat and get off the mat” in the shortest time possible, which his wrestlers did in winning 13 of the 14 matches against Spring Valley.
