Lunsford's gem helps lift L-E past Irmo, 3-0
TAYLOR LUNSFORD WON HIS third straight game Wednesday.
So much for the soft-throwing and crafty descriptions which, oftentimes, are associated with a left-handed pitcher.Taylor Lunsford blew those terms out of the water as the Lugoff-Elgin southpaw shut down host Irmo on two hits while striking out a career-best 16 batters in a 3-0 Demon victory on Wednesday night. The win gave Randy Stokes’ squad a 4-1 Region 4-4A mark heading into tonight’s 7 p.m. home game against league-leading Blythewood at Optimist Field.Stokes said Lunsford is hardly your run-of-the-mill lefty.“Taylor’s velocity has gotten a lot better,” said the L-E head coach. “He had always been a pitch to contact guy, but in his last start, he had eight strikeouts in a win over Dutch Fork. He is doing a good job of locating his fastball and throwing all his pitches for strikes.“He did a very good job of pounding the (strike) zone and getting ahead of their batters.”Lunsford (3-1) won his third consecutive start while working on just four days rest. The Demons, again, took what the opposition gave them in order to give Lunsford enough run support. The guests scored a pair in the second when Jacob Young singled, only to be erased at second on Dylan Grigsby’s force out.
