Two nights after pinning an 11-2 loss on rival Camden, the Lugoff-Elgin baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to visiting Midland Valley on Thursday night at Optimist Field.
The loss left Randy Stokes’ squad with a 2-2-1 record heading into a three-game set with Sumter this week to begin play in Region 5-AAA in a series which opened Monday at L-E, continues Wednesday in Sumter before ending Friday at Optimist Field.
The Demons answered the visitors’ one run ion the top of the first with one of their own to knot things at 1-1.
Ty Dooley led off the bottom of the first by belting a leadoff triple before scoring from third on Jake Laffin’s RBI ground out.
The Mustangs turned things in their favor by scoring six runs in a top of the fourth in which they strung together six hits including a two-run blast from Brenden Moyers which gave the 4A guests a 3-2 advantage.
L-E scored a pair in the home half of the sixth. Will Morris led off with a single to center before Sawyer Reeves followed with a walk. Morris scored on Brandon Lankford’s double while Reeves closed the gap to 7-3, coming home on a J.C. LeGrand one-out sacrifice fly.
L-E had six hits on the night with Dooley adding a single to go with his triple. Lankford had a two-hit night, as well, having a single before his RBI double in the sixth.
Aaron Staples got the starting nod on the mound for L-E and worked the first 3.1 innings before Heath Stokes came on in the middle of the fourth inning. Zack Reynolds and Heath Erwin also found their way to the mound in the final two frames.
