L-E's Caressa Samuel ready for a new set of challenges after signing to play basketball at Pfeiffer
Samuel signing
CARESSA SAMUEL IS FLANKED by her parents, Cathy and Robert Samuel, after the L-E senior signed a national basketball letter-of-intent with Pfeiffer University. Looking on from behind, from left, are L-E principal Tommy Gladden, Samuels AAU coach, Theresa Leggett, L-E girls basketball coach Von Duncan, Samuels younger brother, Robert Samuel Jr., and L-E athletic director, Scott Jones.
For some high school basketball players, the season does not begin until the coach opens the door to a warm gym the first day or so in November. For Caressa Samuel, her basketball training began in the heat of the sun last August when the Lugoff-Elgin senior decided to join the school’s cross-country team. The 5-foot-5 Samuel parlayed the two sports into signing a national letter-of-intent to continue her academic and basketball pursuits at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C. After having run over 3.1-mile cross country trails in the late summer and fall, Samuel never slowed down in leading the Lady Demons in scoring in the program’s first year playing at the 4A level.
