Before they left following Wednesday morning’s off-season contioning session, members of the Lugoff-Elgin football team took a knee and listened to their head coach who was in his third full day on the job.During the course of his post-workout talk, Dave Thomas touched on everything from making sure all players had completed physicals, in order to be able to play this coming season, to getting the Demons used to having a new captain running the ship. When Scott Jones retired as the school’s head football coach, after 12 seasons at the helm, to take an assistant coaching job at Ben Lippen Christian School in Columbia last week, it left L-E and its new principal Worth Thomasson --- who was transferred from his former principal post at North Central High School in June --- needing to find an interim coach with the start of fall practice just 23 days away.In a hastily arranged set of interviews, Thomasson decided that Thomas, whose 19-year stint as an assistant coach including running the L-E defense in 2013, was the man best suited to meet the needs of the school’s football program. With precious little time to waste in preparing for the Week Zero opening game with rival Camden on Aug. 22, Thomas had no choice but to hit the ground running. He doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon.“It’s been a big change,” Thomas said of making the shift from L-E’s defensive coordinator to head coach in thematter of a few minutes after having been offered the post on an interim basis last Friday.“I kind of saw it coming.
