There would have been much easier circumstances for Lugoff-Elgin assistant boys’ basketball coach Garrett Knight to have made his head coaching debut than the one he found himself in on Tuesday.Knight moved to the first seat at the top of the Demons’ bench due to the one-game suspension of head coach Derek Belton following his ejection from last Friday’s loss at Spring Valley.The predicament which Knight found himself facing was leading the Demons into a home game against a Richland Northeast squad which came into this game with a 12-3 record; including its winning last month’s Capital City Classic.After having watched his team turn a 23-10 first quarter-ending deficit into a more-manageable 31-29 game at halftime, Knight walked toward the locker room saying that “it feels like my head is going to explode.” When the dust finally settled following a 56-46 Cavalier victory, Knight looked like a man who had just run a marathon.“I’m used to sitting in that chair and taking stats,” said Knights, who paced the sidelines from the game-opening tip to the final buzzer. “I had to step up and coach tonight.
