Wrestling his way to a college scholarship
DSC 0004.JPG
After having won the 4A state championship at 171 pounds to cap off a more-than-memorable high school wrestling career, 2011 Lugoff-Elgin graduate Will Connell (center) was named as the recipient of the John L. Thompson Sr. Memorial Wrestling Scholarship. The presentation was made to Connell by Foy Thompson (left), brother of the late John L. Thompson Sr., whom many refer to as the godfather of high school wrestling in Kershaw County for his role in starting the sport at the high school and junior levels through his passion for wrestling. Also on hand for the award presentation was Connell’s father and former Camden High wrestling standout and former Lugoff-Elgin state championship-winning (2000-01) wrestling coach, Joe Connell.
