It took the eventual champion to knock her out, but Elgin’s Kelli Murphy advanced to the quarterfinals of last week’s 64th United States Girls’ Junior Golf Championship before losing to Minjee Lee of Australia, 4 and 2.Lee would earn the crown by defeating Alison Lee of Valencia, Cal., 1-up, in Saturday’s 36-hole final match played at the 6,291-yard, par-72 Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Cal..Murphy, a 16-yerar-old rising junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, earned a berth in the national championship event when she qualified for a spot in a qualifier played at the Spring Valley Country club in June.Murphy opened play at Lake Merced with an opening round 79 in last Monday’s first 18 holes of stroke play qualifying. She bettered her score by a stroke, with a 6-over 78, on Tuesday for a two-day 157 (13-over par) total. That figure tied Murphy for 41st place in the field of 154 players from around the world and punched her ticket into match play.Facing Anne Cheng (Torrance, Cal.) in the round of 64, the pair were all square after 18 holes.
