Knights qualify 13 wrestlers into AA Upper State tourney: North Central, which won the Region 4-AA wrestling championship with an 11-1 record, received a championship performances from Mason Gomez at 113 pounds and Tyler Small (152), in qualifying 13 wrestlers into the AA Upper State individual tournament on Feb. 21.
The Knights hosted Saturday’s Region 4-AA individual qualifier held inside The Castle.
After Gomez, NC had a trio of second-place finishers in Michael Boone (106 pounds), Kendrick Green (160) and Kirk Hudson (195).
Third-place finishers from Jason Brazell’s charges included Matt Frazier (120), Diamonte McDonald (126), Robert Hardin (138), Christian Gomez (182) and Ian Barden (220). Taking the fourth and final entry slots for the event hosts were Sky Williams (132), Clay Worley (145) and Dillon Newman (170).
NC hosts AA Upper State tournament Saturday:
The Knights, the fourth seed, take on 13th seeded St. Joseph's in the opening match with the winner meeting the winner between fifth seed Cheraw and number 12 Abbeville. Liberty is the number one seed and has a first round bye in an event in which the winner will compete for the AA state championship on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Dreher High School in Columbia.
Admission is $6 per person on Saturday and tournament officials estimate the championship pairing beginning at about 3 p.m.
North Central will host the 15-team AA Upper State wrestling championship on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. inside The Castle in Boonetown.
