SMILES WERE EASY to come by for the North Central volleyball team after the Lady Knights won Saturdays seventh annual Carolina Challenge in Boonetown. If you had to be confined to being inside on a sunny Saturday, you might as well make the best of it.That is exactly what the North Central High volleyball team did this past weekend as the state’s third-ranked class AA squad won its own seventh annual Carolina Challenge.The Lady Knights won their pool and advanced to the Gold Division, which featured the top six teams from the 12-school event playing for the chance to win the tourney title.Andy Johnson’s charges met and defeated Gilbert in the quarterfinals, winning 25-19 and 25-11. In the semifinals, the tournament hostesses downed AAA Hartsville in straight games, 25-19 and 25-21.Those wins set up a title match with archrival Andrew Jackso n in the finals. The Lady Knights would again pull off the sweep with a 25-21 and 25-17 victory to claim the tournament crown.After having hosted Columbia in a Region 3-AA contest matching up a pair of top 10 squads on Tuesday, NC hits the road to Winnsboro on Thursday to meet Fairfield Central.Dig Pink on tap for Oct. 1: Next Monday, Oct. 1, Andrew Jackson will come to Boonetown for North Central’s annual “Dig Pink” matches for breast cancer awareness.
