Lewisville squeezes past Knights
NC cant get through open door in final minutes of 34-28 loss
GREGORY HOLMES AND NC fell to 1-1 in Region 3-A play with Fridays loss to visiting Lewisville.
There were nights, heck, make that halves, when first-year Lewisville boys basketball coach Larry Davis scored close to, if not more than the 34 points his Lions scored in a six-point win over host North Central on Friday night in The Castle in Boonetown.Davis was one of the nation’s most prolific scorers in 1990-91, scoring a state-record 1,162 points while a senior at Denmark-Olar High School. Named as the state’s Mr. Basketball that year, Davis signed with the University of North Carolina, where he was part of a national championship team before transferring to the University of South Carolina, where he helped the Gamecocks to an SEC title to finish his collegiate career. With the scoreboard still reading the final 34-28 outcome, North Central head coach Chad Dixon was asked if he ever imagined that neither team would sniff the 40-point marker on this night before tipoff.“It was a little surprising that they slowed it down as much as they did,” Dixon said of the Lions’ deliberate offensive strategy.“I was really surprised that they held the ball to start the third quarter for a couple of minutes. It was a three-point ballgame and we were settled in to do that (play zone) a little bit.
