COLUMBIA -- It was two days before the University of South Carolina baseball team was to open defense of its NCAA national championship and Forrest Koumas still had no idea as to when he would be getting the ball. Koumas, a true freshman and a 2010 Lugoff-Elgin graduate, locked down the number two weekend starter’s role for the Gamecocks midway through a season in which he finished with a 6-1 record, including a 5-1 mark in SEC games. On this warm Wednesday afternoon, with the Gamecocks prepared to welcome Georgia Southern, North Carolina State and Stetson to Carolina Stadium for today’s NCAA Regionals, Koumas was left to wonder which game he would take to the mound.

Koumas did not need much seasoning to transition to a starter for Gamecocks
