P-17 begins busy stretch run
ZAC BOWERS SHUT OUT Cheraw last Thursday as Post 17 continues to hold onto second place in League III in the final full week of the regular season.
With a trip to the state playoffs a virtual lock, the Kershaw County Senior American Legion baseball team is looking to improve its post-season stock over the final five games of the League III season.Post 17 took a positive step in its drive to lock down second place --- and a first round home field advantage in the state playoffs with a 1-0 win over Cheraw, its closest pursuer for second place behind Sumter, in a game played last Thursday night at American Legion Park in Camden.Zac Bowers threw nine scoreless innings against Cheraw, but had nothing to show for his sterling mound effort as the game headed into the bottom half of the ninth. The 17ers got the run both they and Bowers were looking for in their final at-bat as Gunner Smith smacked a leadoff single. Austin Hayes was then called on to bunt Smith over to second, only to have the throw from the pitcher, who fielded the ball on the play, gun down Smith at second base for the first out.Hayes then stole second and moved to third when Lawson Stokes’ fly ball to right field was misplayed for an error. Stokes wound up on second on the miscue, still with one gone.
