All three Kershaw County high school volleyball teams won their respective region championships and will host opening round matches in the South Carolina High School League state championship tournaments which begin Thursday. In the case of Lugoff-Elgin, the Region 4-4A champions received a bye into the second round which opens Tuesday, Oct 26. Here is a team-by-team capsule: North Central - AA: The Lady Knights capped a perfect, 12-match Region 4-AA campaign by taking three straight sets from neighboring rival Andrew Jackson last Thursday in Boonetown. The Lady Knights (22-2) won the first set, 25-13, the second, 25-20 before closing things with a 25-16 victory in the finale. Senior hitter Alayna Johnson led the way at the net with 21 kills. She also had three blocks and seven digs. Setter Lily Roberts put the offense in gear for NC, which won its fourth straight conference title and 14th in the last 16 seasons, with 35 assists. Landon Garbade led Andy Johnson’s charges with 15 digs while Laurel Rodgers and Addie Bittner had seven and six kills, respectively. Mary Norwood had a team-best five blocks. Tourney information: The Lady Knights will host the number five at-large entry in Thursday’s AA Lower State tournament opener in a 6 p.m. start inside The Castle in Boonetown. Should the Lady Knights win their opener, they will stay at home to meet the winner between the third-place entries out of regions 6 and 7 on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Camden - AAA: The Lady Bulldogs won the Region 6-AAA title and will host Hanahan, the fourth-place finisher from Region 8, in round one action at 6 p.m. Thursday inside the Dog Pound. A win will have CHS at home for round two on Tuesday, Oct. 26 against the winner between Region 7 runner-up Aynor and the third-place entry out of Region 5. Lugoff-Elgin - 4A: The Lady Demons lost Thursday’s match at Irmo to finish 8-2 in Region 4-4A and win the conference title. In the Irmo pairing, the Lady Yellow Jackets won the first set, 26-24, before L-E took the second, 25-18. Irmo won the third set, 25-18, before the Lady Demons evened the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth. The hostesses won the fifth-set tie-breaker, 15-12, to sweep the season series with Katie Ham’s squad. Tourney information: The Lady Demons have a first round bye and will be at home on Tuesday, Oct. 26at 6 p.m. when they host the winner of Thursday’s opener between Eastside and Indian land. The second round winner will have to travel on Tuesday, Oct. 28 if Catawba Ridge --- which earned a first round bye --- wins its second round match Camden hosting AAA state tennis playoff opener: The Lady Bulldogs won the Region 6-AAA championship and will host Hanahan, the fourth-place finisher out of Region 8, in Thursday’s first round. The match will be played on the Roger Smoak Tennis Courts at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex Should Camden win its opening pairing, Pamela Smoak’s charges will stay home for round two and meet the winner between Georgetown and Fox Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
