After a tough 8-7, 12-inning loss at Lexington last Wednesday, Kershaw County Post 17’s lead atop the League III American Legion standings shrunk to one game ahead of Lexington heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

KC sports a 5-2 League III mark followed by Lexington at 4-3. Aiken and Columbia are tied for third with identical 3-5 records. The 17ers have two games left with Lexington, one with Aiken and one full game and four innings of a suspended game remaining to be played with West Columbia.

Post 17 kicks off its final stretch of the regular season tonight by stepping out of League III play to host rival Sumter in a 7 p.m. start at American Legion Park in Camden. Last season, the P15s defeated KC in the fifth and final game of their second round series to earn a spot in the state American Legion championship tournament.

Stephen Carmon and company (11-2) return to League III play on Wednesday when Aiken comes to American Legion Park for a 7 p.m. start to complete the four-game set which KC leads, 2-1.

On Thursday and Friday, the locals hit the road to meet West Columbia at Brookland-Cayce High School for back-to-back League III games. Thursday’s game will be make-up game for the rain-interrupted June 5 game which KC led, 4-1, in the top of the third inning. That game will be restarted from the beginning of the contest. Friday is a regularly scheduled game. Both games have 7 p.m. starts.

Lexington will host West Columbia Wednesday before traveling to play at Aiken Friday night.

Next week, Post 17 will play a three-game slate on deck including a Fourth of July game at Sumter.  On Monday, July 1, Lexington comes to town before KC closes out the series with the Grizzlies with a visit to the Lexington Sports Complex on Wednesday, July 3 in what is scheduled to be the League III finale.

Post 17 finishes regular season play against Florence Post 1 in a non-league pairing on Monday, July 8 in Florence.

The top two finishers from League III receive a first round bye in the state playoffs which begins Wednesday, July 10. The second round best of five series will begin Monday, July 15.
