After much scrambling, state wrestling brackets set

It was a wild Tuesday of trying to get teams to participate in the 5A and AA-A state duals wrestling tournament as some programs decided to pass on competing in the postseason tournament which begins Saturday.

In the case of Lugoff-Elgin, the Demons were to have faced 5A Upper State at-large entry Mauldin in round one. When the Mavericks declined, Sumter was invited into the tournament. The Gamecocks accepted the offer from the SCHSL and will wrestle their Region 4-5A colleagues in Saturday’s first round.

As for top-ranked North Central, the AA-A seeding committee reached out to coaches throughout the state and found 15 teams that would participate in a tournament which originally had allotted 32 entries.

Nothing changed in class AAA for 10th ranked Camden which will travel to Spartanburg to meet third-ranked Crescent in Saturday’s Upper State opening pairing at Broome High School.

Here are the details for Saturday’s first and second rounds. Third round 5A and AAA matches will be wrestled next Monday with Upper State and Lower State finals next Wednesday. The AA-A Upper State and Lower State semifinals will be wrestled off Saturday with the Upper State and Lower State finals being contested on Wednesday. The state championships for all four classifications will be contested next Saturday at Airport High School in West Columbia.

Lugoff-Elgin state tourney information: The fifth-ranked Demons will host Region 4-5A foe Sumter, a team which they defeated, 63-6, in last Saturday’s conference tournament, in Saturday’s state tourney opener to be contested inside the Demons Den. In the other half of the bracket, on the adjoining mat, second-ranked Hillcrest, the runner-up in Region 2, will take on Greenwood, the third-place finisher out of Region 1.

The first round matches take to the mat beginning at 11 a.m. The winners will then meet in the second round with that match beginning approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the opening pairings.

Admission is $6.

Should the Ted Monroe’s squad win twice on Saturday, they will host the winner of the four-team Rock Hill pod in Monday’s third round.

Camden state tourney information: The Bulldogs will travel to Broome High School in Spartanburg for Saturday’s AAA Upper State opener and will meet Region 1 runner-up and third-ranked Crescent in the first round. In the other half of the bracket, on the adjoining mat, host and Region 2 champion and 10th ranked Broome will take on Mid-Carolina, the fourth-place finisher out of Region 3.

The first round matches take to the mat beginning at 11 a.m. The winners will then meet in the second round with that match beginning following a short break following the completion of the opening pairings.

Should Daniel Sisk’s Dogs win twice on Saturday, they will advance to Monday’s third round against the winner of the Union County pod.

North Central state tourney information: The Knights will host the first three rounds of the AA-A Upper State tournament at The Castle in Boonetown and, as the top seed, will have a bye in rounds one and two. North Central will meet the winner of the second round pairing between Abbeville and Whitmire which has a noon start. The AA-A Upper State semifinal pairing is slated to start at or near 1 p.m.

If the Knights win their match Saturday, Jason Brazell’s squad will host the AA-A Upper State finals next Wednesday with the winner advancing to the state championship.
