CHS, L-E wrestling teams romp to tri-match sweeps

Camden and Lugoff-Elgin did nothing to hurt their lofty spots in the state wrestling polls in their first dual matches of 2019.

Camden, ranked ninth in the most recent AAA poll, took down Loris and host Lake City on Wednesday while L-E, the fourth-ranked team in 5A according to, thumped Myrtle Beach and host Hartsville on Wednesday.

Camden opened its night by taking down Lake City, 52-26. The Bulldogs scored 36 points on six pins supplied by Jamie Valenzuela at 120 pounds, Chandler Turner (126), Hunter McCoy (138),

Joseph Nelson (152), Jalen Holliday (170) and Jevontae Salmond (285).

The Dogs improved to 17-3 in dual matches on the season in a 50-21 win over Loris. Scoring wins via pin for Daniel Sisk’s squad were Dalton Truesdale (132), McCoy (138), Nelson (160), Holliday (170), Jyheem Macklin (182) and Salmond (285).

Demons cruise to wins

The Demons hiked their dual match record to 18-3 by upending Myrtle Beach (72-6) and then Hartsville, 58-15.

In the win over Myrtle Beach, Ted Monroe’s charges received pins from Brice Carron (126), Jacob Vincent (132), Eli McGee (152), Clay Crossway (160) and Tyquan Wright (170). Ethan Hix won by decision at 220 pounds as did Aaron Miller at 285.

The Seahawks forfeited six of the 14 weight classes with L-E’s Jay Wilson (113), Jacob Paulson (120), Hunter Mathis (138), Jaden Robinson (145), Brett Carder (185) and Scotty Dean (195) not having to take to the mat to get wins.

Against the host Red Foxes, the Demons trailed, 9-0, after two matches. Paulson got L-E on track with a major decision victory at 120. Carron, Vincent and Mathis followed with pins at 126, 132 and 138, respectively, before HHS won by pin at 145.

A McGee pin at 152 was followed by Crossway winning by forfeit at 160. After a loss at 170, the Demons closed the match with four consecutive pins coming courtesy of Carder (182), Dean (195), Karrington Charles (220) and Miller (285).

This weekend on the mats

Camden and North Central, the state’s top-ranked AA-A squad, will head to Columbia to take part in the two-day Blue Devil Invitational at Dreher High School. Matches begin at 6 p.m. today and then restarting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Next Tuesday night, Camden will host North Central and Spring Valley in a 6 p.m. tri-match.

L-E will not return to action until the Demons host Newberry and White Knoll next Wednesday in a 6 p.m. start inside the Demons Den.
