Four Demons, two Knights headed for states

Four Lugoff-Elgin and a pair of North Central wrestlers will represent Kershaw County in this weekend’s South Carolina High School League state individual wrestling championships.The two-day event will begin on Friday at the Civic Center of Anderson and will continue through Saturday at the Upstate facility.The Demons, who hosted last weekend’s 4A Lower State qualifier inside the Demons Den, had four senior qualifiers led by Allen Jenerette, who won the 220-pound championship. Classmates Chris Jackson and Kahlil Cooke were third at 120 and 132 pounds, respectively, while Jerelle Hannah finished fourth at 182 pounds.Jenerette, who was third in this weigh class as a junior, will open his quest for a first state championship when he takes on Jacob Hines of Dorman, who was fourth at the Upper State qualifier, in his first round match on Friday.Jackson will also meet a Dorman wrestler when he takes on Hector Contreras, the runner-up in the Upper State, on Friday. Contreras defeated Jackson by a one-point decision in their previous meeting in the second round of the 4A state duals tournament.Cooke’s first round opponent will be York’s Cole Rumfelt while Hannah, the top-ranked 4A wrestler at 182 pounds will go up against Upper State champion Corey Morgan of South Pointe in his state tourney opener.It will be a brother act for North Central in Anderson as senior Daniel Witmore, the defending 195-pound AA-A champion, will try and make it two straight state titles in his Knight finale.
