The Kershaw County Ponytails, the X Play South Carolina state champion softball team, are off to a 2-0 start to the 2019 Dixie X Play World Series in Hopkins County, Texas.

The local entry, under head coach Lee Stokes, opened action in the 10-team event on Saturday with a  12-2 win over Mississippi in a contest stopped after four innings by the 10-run rule.

The locals blew the game open with a nine-run third inning to lead, 11-0. In that frame, Mississippi pitching allowed seven walks while hitting a batter.

On Sunday, the KC entry stayed in the winners’ bracket with a 1-0 win over Tennessee.

In the top of the sixth, Madison Stokes drilled a ground-rule double, advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Haydin Williams sacrifice fly.

Tennessee had a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to push the tying run across to send the game into extra innings.

KC was scheduled to have played Monday night’s winners’ bracket final against the winner of the game between Virginia or Alabama and tourney host, Hopkins County, Texas.

The winner of that contest will play today at 8 p.m. CST.
