(Due to an early deadline for the July Fourth holiday, results from Kershaw County Post 17’s scheduled baseball games with Manning-Santee and Orangeburg last Thursday and Friday, respectively, would not be included in today’s print issue of the Chronicle-Independent.)

The first round of the South Carolina American Legion state playoffs begin tonight across the state.

Kershaw County Post 17 will be in the field for the best-of-five series which alternates between sites with the higher-seeded team playing at home in games one, three and, if needed, the fifth and deciding game.

When today’s issue of the Chronicle-Independent went to press, the 17ers sat in second place in League AAA, which would have given them home field advantage in opening round play.

The locals needed to win one of their final two games to lock down the runner-up slot behind Sumter. Losing both games would have placed KC into a three-way tie for second and would have put a two-game tie-breaker into place.

A third- or fourth-place finish in League III would have Post 17 on the road tonight and at home for a Wednesday and a Friday night game, if needed. The home games will be played at American Legion Park in Camden with 7 p.m. starting times.

The second round of the state playoffs, in which winning team will punch their ticket into the state tournament which begins Saturday, July 23 in Sumter, are set to begin on Monday, July 11.
