FORMER CHS AND USC-Aiken standout Sterling Council will host “Beyond the Court,” the county’s largest summer sports camp at Camden High June 10-12.

With the school year rapidly coming to a close, it is time for summer sports camps in Kershaw County.

Here is a listing of the camps being offered this summer. 

(Note: Pre-registration for all Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department-sponsored camps can be made by through the department or calling 425-6009. In some instances, registration will also handled be on site before the start of the first session of camp.)

Little Bulldog Baseball Camp: Directed by Camden High head baseball coach Denny Beckley, his staff and players, campers will receive fundamental instruction in all phases of baseball. Each player will be drilled defensively on pitching, infield, and outfield play. Campers are to bring their own gloves, bats, and helmets, if possible, and be dressed properly with sweat pants or baseball pants. There will be a break from 11 a.m. until 11:20 a.m. at which time campers may bring money to buy snacks or bring their own food and drink. 

Dates: June 3-6

Location: American Legion Park in Camden

Ages: 6 - 13 

Cost: $60 ($10 reduction for each additional child from the same immediate family)

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

Lugoff-Elgin Demon Baseball Camp: Directed by Lugoff-Elgin Demons’ head varsity baseball coach Randy Stokes, his staff and players, campers will receive fundamental instruction in all phases of baseball. Each player will be drilled defensively on pitching, infield, and outfield play. Campers are to bring their own equipment and water bottle and be dressed properly with sweat pants or baseball pants.

Dates: June 3-5

Location: Optimist Field at Lugoff-Elgin High School

Ages: 6 - 13 

Cost: $50; checks should be made payable to L-EHS

Hours: 8 a.m. - Noon 

Participants can register prior to the start of the first day of camp at Optimist Field. A parent must be on hand to sign an insurance waiver. Early registration is going on now at the Demon Baseball Facebook page which includes two camp forms which must be completed. Early registrants can print the form, fill them out and return the forms and payment to the front office at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School during regular school hours. 

Summer Tennis Program: Boys and Girls with beginner to intermediate tennis skills are invited to participate.  Focus of program will be on basic tennis rules, on court play and skill development.  

Dates/hours:  June 3 – 27, Mondays & Thursdays, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Location: Scott Park Tennis Courts

Ages:  8-16 

Cost:  $25 per participant (includes T-shirt)

“Beyond the Court” Basketball Camp: The camp will teach the fundamentals of basketball and the aspects of life “Beyond the Court.” Emphasis will be placed on physical skills and techniques, proper training and conditioning, team sport, positive mental attitudes, healthy lifestyles and good sportsmanship as well as many other aspects.  The camp is instructed by Camden High varsity boys’ assistant coach and former USC-Aiken standout Sterling Council along with other standout basketball players.  Space will be limited.

Dates: June 10- 12 

Location: Camden High School gym

Ages: 6 - 17 years old 

Hours: 8 a.m. - 5p.m.  

Cost: $60 per camper (includes t-shirt, lunch and sports bag)

Lugoff- Elgin Basketball Camp: This camp is offered for boys and girls ages 5 - 14. The primary focus of this camp will be to teach young players basic basketball skills and fundamentals. The camp participants will also learn the concept of team play. There will be some scrimmage games and awards for free throw shooting, hustling, sportsmanship and more. There will be eight-foot goals for younger players. The camp is instructed by Lugoff-Elgin varsity girls’ head coach, Von Duncan and members of the coaching staff and varsity players assisting. 

Dates:  June 10 - 13 

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Gym

Ages:  Boys and girls ages 5 - 14 

Hours:  9 a.m. - noon

Cost:  $60 per camper (includes T-shirt)

Registration: Thursday, June 6 at the Lugoff Elgin High School gym lobby from 9 a.m. though 11 a.m. and again from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Lugoff-Elgin Future Demons Football Camp: This three-evening camp will be led by Lugoff-Elgin head football coach and former USC and NFL standout Matt Campbell and members of the Demons’ coaching staff. Several L-E players will also be helping out in order to develop a bond between the players in the West Wateree community through all levels. The goal of the camp is to create a solid foundation of fundamentals and drills to help develop young players in a positive, safe and fun environment.

Dates:  June 10 - 12 

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School 

Ages:  Rising third through eighth-graders 

Hours:  5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Cost:  $50 per camper (includes T-shirt)

Early registration is encouraged in order to ensure that a camper is guaranteed to receive a T-shirt. Online registration and registration for is available by logging on to bit.ly/2W1x3FI. Registration and payment may also be made the first day of camp.

Technical Soccer Camp: Technical Soccer Camp offers a fun and nurturing environment that is conducive to learning. The curriculum will cover technical development, technical functional training, scrimmages, and includes our 1,001 touches program. “A” Licensed Director of  Technical Soccer Club and Lugoff-Elgin boys’ head varsity soccer coach Alan Riches selects his staff based on many factors such as their enthusiasm, soccer knowledge and capabilities and the ability to establish relationships. Each camper is treated as an individual with unique needs. The purpose of the recreational camp is to have fun while developing soccer awareness and skills for long-term growth. Its’ a game to enjoy so laughter is used as just one measuring tool. The more serious player will undergo training that will encourage decision making within a competitive environment in order to maximize potential. 

Dates: June 10 - 14        

Location: Kershaw County West Complex, 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages: 6 - 18 years old 

Cost: $75 (includes T-shirt) 

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

Horse Riding Camp or lessons: Three levels of classes are being offered for those who would like to take group or individual lessons.  These classes meet one day a week for four weeks and the cost is $120.  Participants will become acquainted with the horse through grooming, tacking, and leading in the first level, working their way steadily towards jumping, horse show etiquette, conformation and rules of the show ring in higher levels.  Information listed is for the camp dates (Monday through Friday each week).

Dates: (Beginners) June 10 - 28 (each week) and July 8 - 19 (each week)

Hours: 8:30 a.m. – noon 

Location: Voxton Farm, Camden 

Cost: $175

Ages: 6 - 18 years old 

Registration: one week in advance by contacting the KCP&RD. You may attend your choice of half day camp at $175 a week.  Lessons are available which meet one day a week for four weeks at $120 per person (by appointment)

Golf Camp: Learn the fundamentals of golf or improve your skills in this camp which will have two summer sessions. Matt McCarley, PGA professional and head boys’ and girls’ golf coach at Camden High will direct the sessions.  Beginners through advance golfers are welcome. 

Dates: June 17 - 20 and July 15 - 18 

Location: Camden Country Club, Knights Hill Road, Camden

Ages: 7 - 17 years old 

Hours:  8 a.m. – 10 a.m. 

Cost: $85 per camper

Camden High Softball Camp: Learn fundamental skills of fast pitch softball or improve your skills in the camp. Daily sessions will include defensive play, base running and hitting. Instructing the camp will be Camden High varsity softball coach Lynn Looney along with varsity and jayvee players assisting. 

Dates: June 17-21

Location: Marcus Warren Memorial Softball Field, behind Camden High School 

Ages: 7 - 13 

Cost: $50

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon

Mo Fountain and Friends Football Camp: Former Camden High, Clemson University and professional football defensive end Maurice “Mo” Fountain will be hosting a one-day youth football camp at Camden High School on Saturday, July 13.

The camp will be hosted by Fountain and will include former college and NFL players as instructors and includes drills, speed and agility and position technique sessions followed by a Q & A session with Fountain and his staff.

Dates: July 13       

Location: Camden High School practice fields behind Wellness Center on York St. 

Ages: 8 -17

Cost: $25

Hours: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

CHS Volleyball Camp: This camp is for beginners through intermediate players. Beginners will focus on skill development and work toward game play. Intermediate players will refine their skills and work on more advanced team concepts. Players will be grouped by skill level. Instructing the camp will be  Camden High varsity volleyball head coach Paige Wilson with members of her coaching staff and high school players. 

Dates: July 15 - 19       

Location: Camden High School gym 

Ages: 8 & up (beginner - advanced)

Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt) with a $5 reduction for each additional child from the same family

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon

Pre-registration required by noon on July 12 by contacting the KCP&RD

Technical Soccer League (4 weeks): In partnership with the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation, the Technical Soccer League offers a fun and nurturing environment designed to be conducive to long term development.  The purpose of the league is to have fun while developing soccer awareness and skills for long term growth.  The structure will include two nights of training and a scrimmage day focused on developing over winning.  

Dates/hours:  July 16 - August 10; Tuesday and Thursday Skill Session: 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.; Saturday morning scrimmage games: 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Location:  KC West Complex, 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages:  4 - 18

Cost:  $80 per camper (includes two T-shirts)

CHS Cheerleading Camp: Instructing the camp will be the Camden High School varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders. The camp will offer both cheer and dance.  Girls will be divided into two age groups;  ages 4 - 8 will learn cheer and ages 9 - 12 will learn dance.  The public will be invited to a showcase at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31.  

Dates: July 29 - 31    

Location: Camden High School gym  

Ages: 4 - 12 years old 

Cost: $45 (includes T-shirt)  *$55 onsite registration at 8:30 a.m. on July 29

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

 Little Bulldog Football Camp:  Learn the fundamentals of football and improve your skills in this camp. Daily training sessions will include all aspects of defense and offense. Instructing the camp will be Camden High football head coach and former NFL offensive lineman Brian Rimpf along with members of his coaching staff and players. No football equipment needed. Campers are asked to wear cleats and bring a water bottle.

Dates: July 29 - 31        

Location: Camden High School Wellness Center, 1022 Ehrenclou Drive, Camden 

Cost: $40 per child (includes T-shirt)

Ages: 3 - 13 years old 

Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Soccer Camp: This camp is open for boys and girls. Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability. Daily training sessions will include individual ball handling skills, partner skills, developmental games and much more. This fun-filled week is the perfect way to introduce players to the game of soccer and to challenge advanced players to improve their game. Players must wear shin guards and bring a water bottle and soccer ball. The instructor is Peter Wittig, who has 25 years experience coaching at the college, high school, and youth level. Coach Wittig is the varsity boy’s soccer coach at Blythewood High School.

Dates: August 5 - 9        

Location: Kershaw County West Complex,  519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages: 6 - 14 years old 

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon 

Cost: $65 (includes T-shirt)
