Venegas, CMA run past competition

Camden Military Academy’s David Venegas raced to his second straight win in helping the Spartans to victory in a three-team cross country meet hosted by Wilson High School on Tuesday.

CMA placed six runners in the top 12 finishers to run away with the victory with 27 points. Wilson was next with 36 followed by Lake City with 70 points

Venegas won romped to victory as he finished with a time of 17:46, easily outdistancing runner-up James Belt of Wilson who was clocked in 19:09 for the 3.1-mile trek.

William Hyatt (19:47) was the next quickest Spartan with a third-place finish. Teammate Sam Lawing (20:09) finished followed Hyatt home in fourth place while CMA’s Theodore Martin (21:07) and Steven Long (21:23) finished ninth and 10th, respectively. The Spartans’ Joseph Barriere (21:50) was 12th.

Last Wednesday, CMA finished second behind host Spring Valley in a six-team meet contested at Clemson’s Sandhills Research Park in Pontiac.

Spring Valley won the event with 19 points followed by CMA (56), Camden High (65), Ridge View (109), Eau Claire (154) and Lower Richland (170).

Vineags finished second behind SV’s Maurray Jones who won the race with a time of 17:29.50. Venegas was next at 18:05.67. Camden High’s Sam Messinides was 10th in a time of 18:59.21 while Bulldog teammate Garth Maree finished 12th with a clocking of 19:20.25. CMA’s Hyatt (19:41.77) and Lawing (19:46.51) were 14th and 15th.

Camden High received a 19th place finish from Jacob Hann, who ran a 20:03.99.
