WWII brought about the greatest migration of U. S. citizens. Millions joined the Armed Forces and went to training facilities outside of their local area and many were transferred overseas, while the need for mass production moved countless citizens to new locales to find jobs in industry. A North Carolina farm girl, Flonnie Higgins, who later started a campaign to send coupons to soldiers overseas, found work in the new city of Oak Ridge, Tenn., which was developed for the building of the atomic bomb.
