Column: 1937 -- the year we ‘camped out’

We moved from Patrick in Chesterfield County into the Cassatt community of Kershaw County in 1929. Through 1936, we leased tracts of land with long leaf pines on them that were suitable to turpentine. We collected the turpentine and planted the farmland on the tract in cotton, corn, vegetables, hay and other crops.
