Column: Florence in the age of fake news
Placeholder Image
When I think about Hurricane Florence, two images come to mind. The first is of New Bern, N.C., virtually all its streets completely covered in water despite being dozens of miles away from where Florence came ashore at Wilmington, N.C. More than 450 people had to be rescued in New Bern alone, many trapped in their homes, some from their roofs; others had to be rescued from the tops of cars in the middle of flooded roads. And then there’s the image of Weather Channel reporter Mike Seidel “struggling” to stand up in the wind in Wilmington as two young men, possibly teenagers, nonchalantly walk behind him. I’ve played back the video several times.
