Column: Paving U.S. 1

When paving of U.S. 1 was completed, it stretched from Maine to Florida. The last piece of the road to be paved was in Cheraw, on September 17, 1931. On that date, Franklin D. Roosevelt, then governor of New York, was introduced as the future president of the United States before he addressed the group at Cheraw by telephone as a part of the celebration of this national event.
