There is a crisis-level teacher shortage in South Carolina. Although the South Carolina Department of Education won’t comment until specific data is released in a few weeks, numbers collected by SC for Ed (the group that staged the 10,000 teacher march in Columbia this past May) indicate that there were around 900 vacant teaching positions statewide at the start of the school year. Many classrooms in South Carolina are being staffed by non-certified substitutes or simply unqualified individuals.
