Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968. I had turned 3 years old exactly a week earlier, March 28. My mother, who was born in Memphis, by the way, named me for Dr. King, and I feel lucky to have lived a life where I’ve been exposed to his legacy in various ways.
