I addressed foundation texts, the Psalms and the Gospels, in my first books, “A Carolina Psalter,” and “Come into the Light,” and then wondered what else? I wondered if the history of South Carolina itself embodied not so much foundation texts as foundation memories. Granted, the parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant, where one person’s reality amounts to the part of the elephant they touch, might apply to any state, any family, any history -- just look at present-day politics.
