Finding inspiration in new planets

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced this week that scientists using its Spitzer Space Telescope have discovered a total of seven roughly Earth-sized planets in a previously discovered solar system’s habitable zone. From a purely scientific point of view, this is exciting news. It’s the first-ever discovery of its kind, despite the discovery in recent years of, literally, thousands of planets outside our own solar system.
