Around this time of year I get the hankering to head for the hills -- the North Carolina mountains, actually -- and this year the itch is coming on pretty heavily. Don’t get me wrong; I love the Lowcountry, but there’s something about the mountains that hits me in a way I hardly understand. Whether I’m sitting on a huge deck overlooking a spectacular mountain vista with sketch pad in one hand and a tall drink in the other or walking with my Beloved and our four-legged home schooled fur children on some forest trail, it’s a totally different vibe up there, and every bit as insistent as the beckoning calls of the ocean.
