When I left you in the middle of the story of McRae’s Mill in last month’s column, I promised to continue this month. As you may recall, Camden’s Duncan McRae and Gen. Zachariah Cantey formed a mercantile business partnership under the name of McRae and Cantey in 1782. In May 1796, the firm purchased a 3,203-acre tract of the late Joseph Kershaw’s land which encompassed his beloved “Hermitage” plantation south of Big Pine Tree Creek and his old mill site on the north side of Big Pine Tree Creek.
