Obituaries are a lot more interesting now than they used to be, though perhaps a bit less truthful. Back in the days when newspapers limited the length of obits and insisted they be pretty much standardized, death notices provided basic facts: birth and death dates, occupation, survivors, funeral plans. The obit business changed several years ago when newspapers across the country began charging for them.
