Lost among the daily news hoopla of the Great Recession, the housing comeback, the stock market run and the decline of the euro has been a bit of economic news that most people would probably find surprising: Railroads are growing and prospering as they haven’t been able to do in decades. That’s a good thing, of course, but the growth is all coming in the freight business. That’s great news for companies which must ship goods -- lumber, oil, refrigerators -- from place to place But it doesn’t do much for the passenger side of rail travel and the wanderlust that resides in many Americans -- the lure of mysterious places that leads people to head out into the great unknown and follow their noses.
