Pledges can prove costly in campaigns

Although Sen. Jim DeMint is not likely to make a run for the presidency in 2012, he is still looking to shape the Republican field toward his brand of Tea Party politics. The senator from the Palmetto State is part of a movement calling for GOP presidential hopefuls to make a pledge to cut and cap federal spending and support a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. While a few candidates have signed the pledge, others have been hesitant to officially support DeMint’s initiative.
