It was half a century ago this month that President John F. Kennedy set a goal for the United States to put a man on the moon and return him safely to earth by the end of the decade. Speaking at Texas’ Rice University, Kennedy vowed the U.S. would lead the way in space exploration. Kennedy vowed that America, locked in the midst of a cold war with the Soviet Union, “does not intend to founder in the backwash of the coming age of space.
