Running schools more like a business

In the middle of more than $30 million in budget cuts our school district had to make during the economic downturn -- cuts that are not yet close to being fully restored -- a number of politicians and citizens told me that schools needed to be “run more like a business.” That’s a line I hear a lot. It’s a good sound bite, especially from politicians and others who don’t want to acknowledge the consequences of poor long-term decisions.
