Snakes to be released into Wateree

I’ve covered news for nearly four decades in Kershaw County yet I’ve never been as shocked as I was upon learning yesterday that the S.C. Department of Wildlife will release more than 10,000 deadly cotton-mouth moccasins into Lake Wateree later this summer. Department officials said the poisonous snakes, which at one time were abundant in Lake Wateree but are now scarce, will be released on a gradual timetable “in an effort to restore an ecosystem which has been increasingly unfriendly to this valuable species.” A full story on the controversial plan will be in Monday’s Chronicle-Independent.
