Editorial: Austin Brown

While not a Camden native and having moved away from here for stretches of time, there was no more fierce proponent of the town than Austin Brown. On Wednesday morning, after battling an illness, one of the biggest proponents and a strong voice for Camden went silent with the passing of the 89-year-old Brown, whose wife of 68 years, Sally, was by his side at the couple’s home on Hilton Head Island. While he will be forever linked to his association with Thoroughbred racing, the Carolina Cup Racing Association and the National Steeplechase Foundation, Austin Brown was hardly a man one could pigeonhole into being a one-trick pony, so to speak.
