Editorial: Bathrooms

One of our readers posits some pointed questions in a letter to the editor concerning President Barack Obama’s administration letter Friday to all public school systems across the nation to let transgender students choose to use bathrooms matching the gender with which they identify. As the New York Times indicated Friday, the directive -- signed by the U.S. departments of education and justice -- does not have the force of law, but does threaten lawsuits and/or loss of federal aid against school districts which do not comply. While we firmly believe in states’ rights and are not too happy with the administration’s threats, there are some issues which we do feel rise to the federal level.
