Editorial: EMS face-off

Last week’s face-off between Kershaw County Council and KershawHealth about the county’s $3 million request to carry EMS operations highlighted just how important it is for the hospital to be turned over to Capella Healthcare. Since mid-2013, we have reported on the possible $32 million loss KershawHealth could suffer by 2018 due to external factors, most notably the decision not to expand Medicaid in this state. But part of the hospital’s ongoing losses also come from an average $700,000 annual deficit from EMS alone -- an average which used to be closer to $900,000.
