A year ago, the grief was still fresh. We were all still reeling from the murders of nine innocent people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, one of the oldest African-American congregations in the U.S. We wrote then -- and still believe now -- “Charleston has shown the rest of the country how to transcend such grief in a non-violent, some would even say, loving way.” We will not speak of the defendant in this case.
