Editorial: Two gems

With Black History Month well underway, it is fitting to see two interesting, exciting and important events coming up this weekend. The African American Cultural Center, located adjacent to the Price House on York Street, will officially open its doors to the public Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The purpose of the center, of course, is to celebrate and highlight the contributions of Camden’s African American community to the town and to Kershaw County. Its first exhibit is “Camden’s Native Son, Lawrence Eugene Doby,” who is none other than Larry Doby, the second black player to play in Major League Baseball and the first to play in the American League, joining the Cleveland Indians just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the National League.
