• When Ken Mehlman, who ran President George W. Bush’s re-election campaign in 2004 and became chairman of the Republican National Committee, revealed that he is gay, it was pretty much a non-story, which is a good thing. Conservative Republicans are focused on financial issues and the inability of Washington to control spending rather than what’s going on behind the doors of private homes. That’s reasonable and places focus where it should be; it also indicates increasing tolerance among all Americans. • The concept of term limits, which was a hot-button issue across the country a few years ago, was revived last week by Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley, who advocated limiting legislative service in South Carolina to 12 years.
